Inaugural First Generation Harvard Alumni Association (FGHA) Fundraising Campaign

Building Foundations

A community of those who are first, but not alone. As the first to achieve the American dream of higher education, first-generation students and alumni come to represent the hopes and aspirations of many—many generations, many cultures, many conflicting identities. What will Harvard mean for myself and my family? How will I reconcile the worlds that I now move between? How important is upward social mobility to me and my passions? It’s a lot to carry at a place like Harvard. As first-gens, we know we are capable of this and other amazing feats, for ourselves, our families, and our communities. But, as Harvard grads, we also know that success is built on strong foundations.

The First Generation Harvard Alumni (FGHA), an officially recognized Shared Interest Group of the Harvard Alumni Association, is working to “pay it forward” to build that foundation for first-gens at Harvard. Our mission is to support the Harvard first-gen community, among both students and alumni. We achieve this mission through a mentoring program for first-gen freshmen, supporting the community building and advocacy efforts of the Harvard First Generation Student Union (FGSU), and providing regional networking opportunities for first-gen alumni, among other growing initiatives.

To support these foundation-building efforts, FGHA is launching its inaugural Annual Fundraising Campaign. Our goal is simple but ambitious: $30K in 30 days. A majority of these funds will go towards supporting FGSU community programming such as:

The Class of 2018 First-Generation Commencement Ceremony

Harvard Representation at the 2018 1vyG Conference at UPenn

FGSU Event Sponsorship for Spring 2018 and Fall 2019

Future First-Generation Initiatives such as Scholarships or Awards

Additionally, FGHA will leverage the funds from our 2017-18 “Building Foundations” campaign to support the expansion of our alumni programming, including the creation of career resources and regional networking opportunities. Such alumni programming will serve as a crucial proof of concept as we work to build a network of first-gen alumni groups across the Ivy League and beyond.
